BigTmusic.com linked up with Johnknee Selby aka DJ MuGsHoTt for an exclusive interview. DJ MuGsHoTt got his start at the age of 10 watching his brother Alfonzo, and cousin Reggie blending two to four records together with loud house speakers and a receiver. At that moment, he realized that DJ’ing is what he wanted to do. MuGsHoTt considers himself more of a Party Rocka DJ with a passion for DJ’ing to blend acapellas with different instrumentals to make it unique!
BigTmusic.com: DJ Mugshott, we appreciate you stopping by. First things, first. How did you get the name DJ Mugshott?
DJ MuGsHoTt: My nickname is Muggy that the family gave me (I don’t know why LOL), and I am a pretty good basketball player. One day on the basketball court, one of my friends said, “Ooooooohhh! Muggy shot your lights out!” So I took MuGsHoTt out of it.
BigTmusic.com: Creative thinking on the name! You’ve been really big in the party/event scene for Baltimore for years. When did you first realize you actually had the talent and love for DJ’ing?
DJ MuGsHoTt: I first realized back in 1995 when I was asked to DJ a pool party in Harford Square in Edgewood, MD.
BigTmusic.com: Oh ok. What was the first gig that you got that made you realize that you are a pro DJ now?
DJ MuGsHoTt: The first official pro gig I’ve got would be DJ’ing at the VFW Post 6054 in 1996. I was just starting out as one as the youngest DJ’s in Harford County who has the mixing style that caters to everyone who loves to see people get out there and dance showing that you’re having a good time. I was asked by the VFW’s house DJ, DJ Black, if I wanted to come help him spin for a night, and I was like “Sure!” My first actual club scene.
BigTmusic.com: That’s dope of DJ Black looking out for you! How many different venues have you DJ’ed at since then, and where were they located?
DJ MuGsHoTt: I’ve DJ’ed about 35 different venues. From Maryland to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington DC is where I’ve been.
BigTmusic.com: Dang, that’s a lot of states you’ve played. When you are at those places, what are your 2 favorite go-to tracks to play that almost always get the party going?
DJ MuGsHoTt: 1, is Beyonce “Love on Top” mixed with VIC “The Wobble”. 2, is Michael Jackson “Remember the Time” mixed with Ruscola (Dru Hill) “Turn it Down (Why you Beefin)”.
BigTmusic.com: Nice!! Those mixes sound serious. You have to send those our way. Where are some venues you would like to work at that you haven’t already?
DJ MuGsHoTt: The Baltimore Arena when big shows comes to town.
BigTmusic.com: That does sound like a dream gig hearing your music being played at a huge venue like that. When you are DJ’ing at these different venues, what equipment are you responsible for bringing?
DJ MuGsHoTt: My turntables or controller speakers, wireless mic, lights, and sometimes a monitor mostly for weddings.
BigTmusic.com: Speaking of equipment, what are your favorite pieces equipment you use for your production?
DJ MuGsHoTt: It’s the Controller and my power speakers & my double 18 in JBL Bass bottom.
BigTmusic.com: Were those your first pieces of equipment, and if not, what was your first?
DJ MuGsHoTt: First starting out, I had the two turntables a mixer and 6 speakers and like 10-14 crates of records. I thank God for technology. I don’t miss carrying all of that equipment. LOL
BigTmusic.com: Major props to you and all those other DJ’s out there carrying all that heavy equipment! Have you heard other DJ’s out there trying to copy your sound?
DJ MuGsHoTt: Yes!
BigTmusic.com: *Stop the record* How was your reaction when you heard your sound being stolen, and did you confront the DJ’s?!?
DJ MuGsHoTt: I felt kind of proud that the DJ was using my DJ set and style to use at the function to get the people partying and up on the dance floor. I did walk up to the DJ booth and told the DJ that he was rocking and gave him a fist pound.
BigTmusic.com: Classy move, MuGsHoTt! What is one of your pet peeves while DJ’ing a big party?
DJ MuGsHoTt: When someone comes to me to request a song and when I play it they don’t dance to it.
BigTmusic.com: LOL, that does sound kind of wack! Do you make your own mixes, and if so, do you play them at your events, or just stick to the script?
DJ MuGsHoTt: Everything I play is on the fly. Surveying the crowd to get a feel of what I should be playing.
BigTmusic.com: What is a song that you feel like gets slept on at parties, but it is really good and it just doesn’t get a fair chance by the crowd?
DJ MuGsHoTt: It’s an older song by Marvin Sease called “Candy Licker”. It’s one of those songs you have to listen to the words.
BigTmusic.com: “Candy Licker” is a classic!! Who are some of the major DJs that influenced you?
DJ MuGsHoTt: DJ Technics, DJ Kw Griff, DJ KSwift, DJ Mike Crosby, DJ Kenny K, DJ Black, DJ Dred, DJ Heartbreak, DJ Lee, DJ Rod Lee, DJ Lady Styles, DJ Jazzy Jeff, & DJ Bee.
BigTmusic.com: How does a recording artist go about getting their music to you?
DJ MuGsHoTt: By email and it has to be clean (radio edit) and instrumental.
BigTmusic.com: That’s good to know. We will put your email at the end of this interview for those artist who may be interested. That you know of, who is the biggest celebrity you have DJ’ed for?
DJ MuGsHoTt: Miki Howard!
BigTmusic.com: Miki Howard, R&B legend! Did you actually meet Miki while at the party, and did you play her music?
DJ MuGsHoTt: Yes, sir!
BigTmusic.com: Awesome! She is super talented! Have you released any official mixtapes or other projects, and if so, how often do you make these projects?
DJ MuGsHoTt: I’ve have a couple of mix CD’s out, and had live broadcast sets on Ustream. Keeping up with my craft, I try to make a mix here and there and send it out to my peeps which I should upload to my mixcloud or my YouTube channel.
BigTmusic.com: What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with venue hosts?
DJ MuGsHoTt: The late excuse on how that they didn’t do so good with promoting and didn’t make enough at the door so we can’t pay you the full amount.
BigTmusic.com: Damn that sucks! What do you do now to make sure you get paid?
DJ MuGsHoTt: Make sure you get your money up front or the day before.
BigTmusic.com: That’s a good idea. What are your thoughts about social media and it’s ability to let you connect with your fans?
DJ MuGsHoTt: Social Media is a blessing. Things are much easier to keep people informed what you have going on versus then word of mouth flyers.
BigTmusic.com: Social media, has made life cheaper. What does DJ MuGsHoTt do in his free time?
DJ MuGsHoTt: Bowling, basketball, golfing, and spending time with my family baking.
BigTmusic.com: Niceee!! We see you bowling man! What does the future hold for DJ MuGsHoTt?
DJ MuGsHoTt: To keep giving good service and continue to keep going strong. Keep working on my craft.
