BigTmusic.com was lucky enough to get an exclusive interview with rising producer, Hurrikane RG, out of San Antonio, TX. Hurrikane RG, who’s originally from Little Rock, AR, caught us up to speed about his new album “Behind the Dream Vol. 1”, and his whole creative process before creating that perfect track. Read what he had to say below!
BigTmusic: Whats good RG? We’ve be hearing some fire tracks from you on the Tone city streets. How’s the feeling of knowing you just created a dope ass track that got artist going crazy trying to hop on it?
Hurrikane RG: It’s a very humbling experience. I’ve always felt that as long as I keep working at my craft, that I would eventually get a break. So I feel it’s a blessing the way everything is unfolding.
BigTmusic: That’s good to hear man. Tell us about your hot single “You Know Wassup” featuring Shaun Anthony, Spark Da Beast, and King Kyle Lee, and how it came about.
Hurrikane RG: The concept for the track was influenced by listening to 90’s music and I was looking to cross mix today’s hard hitting 808’s with a modern day 90’s feel. Once the track was created, I knew exactly who I wanted to pen the hook so I reached out to Shaun Anthony who’s an up-in-coming soulful singer based in San Antonio. I also have a great music past with Spark Da Beast so I reached out to him as well to be on the track and King Kyle Lee. I knew we had something special and the visual was all we were needing to sell the song. “You Know Wassup” has a catchy vibe to it. That’s what I love about the mesh of the artist and track!
BigTmusic: It’s really good song man. We see you have a new project dropping called “Behind the Dream Vol. 1” soon. What can we expect from this project?
Hurrikane RG: Yes! Behind the Dream Vol.1…I’m excited about this project! I have enormous support from the San Antonio artist and neighboring artist in other cities such as Houston and Killeen. It’s featuring 30 artist who all are featured on my production. I also I have a production collaboration with Don Blaze on the “Killin” track that has a great bounce to it. Other than that collaboration, all the tracks on the album were produced by myself. You can expect a great mixture of lyrical talent off the Behind the Dream album.
BigTmusic: How long have you been working on Behind the Dream, and who did you collaborate with to make it all come together?
Hurrikane RG: I began working on Behind the Dream in late August of 2013. Features by Big Mike (Houston LEGEND!!!), IQ, J Starr, SoSanAntone, Trizzol, Aj Hernz, Yung Texxus, Ruby Red, Avar the Star, Chaise “Texas Finest”, Don Blaze, Cdukes, Greg Wise, J luciano, Big Peezy, Highstrung, Novacane, Nes, Ha$h and Bank$, Tony Fayte, Core, Polo Nate, Billy Ray, Beatmaker Will, and Tony Jones.
BigTmusic: With a line up like that, was it hard coordinating with the artist to get them to drop their verses?
Hurrikane RG: Well it was for some of the artist who didn’t have access to a studio. I would hear all type of stuff, but at the end of the day it was straight because they were showing me love. So I had to take the good with the bad but for the most part it came together nicely.
BigTmusic: Yea, sometimes that can be a headache. Were you there for the recording process with the artist, or did they send you the finished tracks?
Hurrikane RG: For the most part the artist just sent me back the finished record. I watched maybe a dozen of them record the record.
BigTmusic: Did you rap or sing on the project any?
Hurrikane RG: I actually did! I rapped the hook on “All I Know” featuring Yung Texxus and Ruby Red. It’s one of my favorite songs off of the album.
BigTmusic: It’s nice your spittin’ on the album! How long have you been getting behind the mic, and do you enjoy it more than producing?
Hurrikane RG: I’ve been getting on the mic since 2000 but it’s not something I put alot of energy behind. I prefer to stay in my lane which is production but every BLUE MOON I’ll hop on them mic and do a hook.
BigTmusic: So other than “All I Know”, what are some of your other favorite tracks on the project?
Hurrikane RG: Right now, I play the hell out of “Drug Musik” by IQ. It gets me motivated to start my day! I like them all to be honest. I listen to “Killin” by Don Blaze, “Hear It” by Trizzol, and “How You Really Want It” by J Starr, AvartheStar and Chaise often.
BigTmusic: Cool. We are going to check those tracks out first. What gear did you mostly use for the production?
Hurrikane RG: I use Reason for my software of choice, with my baby, Alesis Q25 midi keyboard!
BigTmusic: Reason is pretty popular amongst some of the top producers in the game today. What’s your inspiration before creating a beat? Do you immediately shop it around to artist for songs?
Hurrikane RG: I think that the way my day is going sets the tempo for my production. I ordinarily let the main artist I’m working with get first dibs on a track before I shop the track to other artist.
BigTmusic: Do you sell your beats, and if so, how does an artist who wants a Hurrikane RG beat get in contact with you?
Hurrikane RG: Yes I sell my tracks. If any artist is interested in doing business they normally reach out to me by Twitter, Facebook, or by phone (210)505-5895
BigTmusic: Where will Behind the Dream Vol. 1 be available?
Hurrikane RG: You will be able to get the album on Datpiff, Livemixtapes.com, Spotify and the hard copy on the streets of San Antonio, Houston, Austin and Little Rock.
BigTmusic: Do you have any out of town features on the project?
Hurrikane RG: Yes, I have out of town features. I have Big Mike from Houston (Rap Legend!!!), Hash and Banks from Denver, Nes from Michigan, Don Blaze from Arkansas, Yung Texxas from Killeen, and Rasheed (Dopehouse Music) from Houston.
BigTmusic: We know you’re originally from Little Rock, Arkansas. Do you think there is more talent from there or San Antonio?
Hurrikane RG: To be honest it’s a numbers game! We have maybe close to 175,000 people in Little Rock compared to the 2,000,000 people here in San Antonio. They both have the same hunger and the talent is undeniable in both cities.
BigTmusic: Do you work with any artist from out in Arkansas still?
Hurrikane RG: Yes I work with Don Blaze from Little Rock. We are long time good friends and we’ve been doing this music together since Day 1!
BigTmusic: That’s good you and Don Blaze still keep in touch and collab. If you could change one aspect of the music industry now, what would it be?
Hurrikane RG: That’s a good question. I kind of feel like you have to get in where you fit in. With there being so much talent in the world, it’s hard to break yourself but that’s the best part of the journey…Becoming a Brand.
BigTmusic: Who are some of your favorite producers?
Hurrikane RG: My favorite producers are Devante Swing (Jodeci), Mannie Fresh, Dr. Dre, Neptunes, Mike Will Made It, Lil Jon, Rodney Jerkins, Don Blaze and Smurf.
BigTmusic: Have you ever made a beat that you thought was really good, but then an artist puts a song in another direction that you didn’t envision on it?
Hurrikane RG: That happens quite often! But, hey, every artist hears something different on a track. Some music doesn’t reach its most potential because of that reason. But, hey, it’s music someone may like it is my thought.
BigTmusic: True. Time for some promo. What are your 3 favorite tracks that are floating around online now that your fans can hear? (Check out the tracks below)
Hurrikane RG: “You know Wassup” by Shaun Anthony, King Kyle Lee and Spark da Beast. “Drug Musik” by IQ. “My Mind” by SoSanAntone and Aj Hernz.
BigTmusic: All 3 of those songs go hard! You know we especially like that “My Mind” by SoSA since we mixed it! What are some of your plans for the future in this hectic music industry?
Hurrikane RG: To work with every great artist and to bring in a new sound of music.
BigTmusic: Thanks RG for the interview! Any last shout outs?
Hurrikane RG: Shout out to everyone who supported my vision. An even bigger shout out to ALL THE ARTIST ON THE ALBUM from San Antonio up to Denver and TEXAS for supporting the movement!
